Is Learning Under Stress Effective?

When studying for your CPA exam, we know it can often times be very stressful. While some stress can be motivating, most of the time stress can lead to impaired brain function and can make studying much more difficult. It has also been shown that memory is greatly affected when stressed, which means stress is not ideal to study effectively.

In order to avoid stress as much as possible when studying, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

1.      Don’t rush!

When studying, it is better to focus on accuracy rather than speed. If you try to cram too much information into one study session, it can seem overwhelming leading to feelings of stress.

2.      Start small!

Before actually studying for your exam, you may find yourself freaking out about just how much information you have to learn. To avoid this added stress, start by breaking up the material you must learn into smaller, more manageable pieces instead of thinking about how much information you have to study overall.

3.      Listen to your brain!

If you find yourself very stressed, it is time to listen to your brain and reevaluate your studying approach. You want to make sure you acknowledge your stress, rather than ignore it, before it really starts to affect your ability to study.

Here at TAPA Institute we know just how much stress can negatively affect our ability to study. That is why we make sure to work with our clients to create customized study plans for them that are infused with stress management techniques.
